What is going on.

A leaking dishwasher needs attention before water damages the floor, the cabinets, or the subfloor. The leak point tells you a lot. Water at the front of the door usually points to a worn or dirty door gasket, while water under the unit suggests a hose connection, the pump, or the tub. Overfilling from a stuck inlet valve and too much suds from the wrong detergent are common causes too.

  • Worn or dirty door gasket

    The rubber gasket around the door seals the tub. Grease and grime on the gasket, or a gasket that has gone stiff and cracked, lets water seep out the front.

  • Wrong detergent or too much of it

    Dish soap or hand soap creates heavy suds that push water past the door seal. Even the right detergent leaks if the cup is overfilled.

  • Loose or cracked hose connections

    The fill hose and drain hose connect with clamps that loosen over time. A worn clamp or a cracked hose drips water under the dishwasher.

  • Faulty water inlet valve

    A stuck inlet valve keeps letting water in past the normal fill level. The tub overfills and water spills over the door or out the bottom.

  • Door latch or alignment problem

    A bent latch or a door knocked out of alignment will not pull the gasket tight. Even a good seal leaks if the door does not close square.

Try this first: safe DIY checks.

  1. Wipe the door gasket with a damp cloth to remove grease and food, then check the rubber for cracks or stiff spots.

  2. Confirm you are using detergent made for dishwashers, never dish soap, and that the cup is not overfilled.

  3. Look for the leak point during a cycle: front of the door points to the gasket, under the unit points to a hose or the pump.

  4. Check that the dishwasher sits level and the door closes square against the tub without flexing.

  5. If you can reach the hoses behind a removable kickplate, look for drips at the clamps and snug any that feel loose by hand.

  6. Make sure dishes and tall items are not blocking the door from sealing fully.
