GE Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working
Last updated:
The ice maker stops producing cubes, makes too few, or turns out hollow or undersized ice.
What is going on.
An ice maker needs three things to work: water reaching the mold, a cold enough freezer to freeze it, and a working harvest cycle to drop the cubes into the bin. A fault in any one of those steps stops production. The problem is usually a water supply issue or a worn part in the ice maker itself rather than the freezer being broken.
Most common causes.
-
Faulty water inlet valve
The inlet valve opens to fill the ice mold. Mineral buildup or an electrical failure stops it from opening, so the mold never fills and no ice forms.
-
Frozen or kinked water line
The fill tube that carries water to the mold can freeze solid or get pinched. Water cannot reach the mold and the ice maker sits empty.
-
Clogged water filter
A filter past its service life restricts flow. The mold fills slowly or only partway, which produces small, hollow, or no cubes.
-
Failed ice maker assembly
The motor, thermostat, or control module inside the ice maker can wear out. When the harvest cycle stops, finished cubes never eject into the bin.
-
Freezer temperature too warm
Ice makers need a freezer near zero degrees Fahrenheit. A freezer running warm freezes cubes too slowly or not at all.
Try this first: safe DIY checks.
-
Confirm the ice maker is switched on, since the on/off arm or toggle is easy to bump.
-
Check that the freezer is set near zero degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Replace the water filter if it has been in place longer than six months.
-
Inspect the water line behind the fridge for kinks or visible frost.
-
Look for ice jammed in the bin or against the ejector arm and clear it by hand.
-
Confirm the household water supply valve to the fridge is fully open.
GE refrigerator ice maker not working.
GE Appliances, now a Haier company, splits its refrigerators into the mainstream GE line, the feature-rich GE Profile line, and the design-led Cafe line, with most Profile units built as 36-inch French door models. Profile and Cafe refrigerators rely heavily on electronic control boards, multiple thermistors, and dispenser modules, so a cooling or temperature complaint frequently involves sensor and board diagnosis rather than a purely mechanical fault. Across all three lines, evaporator fan failure, defrost-system faults, and inlet-valve or icemaker issues remain the common service items in Orange County kitchens.

Questions homeowners ask.
- Why did my ice maker suddenly stop making ice?
- A sudden stop usually points to water not reaching the mold. A failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, or a closed supply valve are the most common reasons.
- How long after turning the ice maker on should I see ice?
- A working ice maker typically drops its first batch within ninety minutes to a few hours, and fills the bin within about a day.
- Why is my ice maker making small or hollow cubes?
- Small or hollow cubes mean the mold is not filling completely. A clogged water filter, low water pressure, or a partially blocked inlet valve restricts the fill.
