JennAir Dishwasher Not Cleaning
Last updated:
The dishwasher runs a full cycle but dishes come out with food residue, film, or grit still on them.
What is going on.
A dishwasher needs four things to clean well: a clear path for water in, a pump with enough pressure, water hot enough to dissolve grease, and spray arms that spin freely. When dishes come out dirty, one of those is missing. The cause ranges from a clogged spray arm or a dirty filter to weak water pressure, a tired wash pump, or hard-water buildup. Many cases trace to maintenance rather than a failed part.
Most common causes.
-
Clogged spray arm holes
Food particles and mineral scale block the small jets on the spray arms. Water then sprays unevenly and cannot reach every rack.
-
Dirty or clogged filter
A filter packed with debris recirculates dirty water back onto the dishes. The result is gritty residue and a cloudy film after the cycle.
-
Water not hot enough
Detergent and grease need water near 120 degrees Fahrenheit to break down. If the home water heater is set low, grease solidifies on dishes instead of washing away.
-
Worn wash pump or broken impeller
The wash pump and its impeller drive water up through the spray arms. A worn pump or a cracked impeller cannot build the pressure needed to clean.
-
Hard-water scale and detergent problems
Orange County water is hard, and mineral scale coats the tub, arms, and heating element over time. Old detergent or the wrong amount also leaves a white haze.
Try this first: safe DIY checks.
-
Twist out and rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub. Do this every few weeks to keep wash water clean.
-
Lift out each spray arm and clear the jet holes with a toothpick, then flush them under the faucet.
-
Run the hot tap at the kitchen sink until water turns hot, then start the cycle so the dishwasher fills with hot water from the first fill.
-
Run an empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack to strip grease film and light mineral scale.
-
Switch to fresh detergent and use the dose the manufacturer lists. Old or caked detergent cleans poorly.
-
Load dishes so they do not nest or block the spray arms, and confirm the rinse-aid dispenser is filled.
JennAir dishwasher not cleaning.
JennAir dishwashers are a luxury Whirlpool Corporation line built almost entirely as panel-ready fully integrated units, with the controls hidden on the top edge of the door and a heavy custom cabinet panel on the front. That panel adds weight and can pull the door out of alignment, which shows up as latch faults, leaks at the door gasket, or a unit that will not start. The TriFecta wash system uses three pressurized stainless wash arms, so a weak-cleaning complaint can come from any one arm or its feed rather than a single spray tower.

Questions homeowners ask.
- Why are my dishes covered in a white film?
- A white film is usually hard-water mineral scale or leftover detergent. A vinegar rinse cycle and added rinse aid clear most cases. Persistent film can mean the water is not hot enough.
- Should I rinse dishes before loading them?
- Scrape off large food, but heavy pre-rinsing is not needed. Modern detergents need some food soil to work against. The real fix for dirty results is clean filters and spray arms.
- Could low water pressure in my house cause this?
- Yes. If the dishwasher does not fill fully, the spray arms run weak. A failing water inlet valve causes the same symptom and a technician can tell the two apart.
