Maytag Dryer Not Heating

The dryer drum turns and the cycle runs, but the air stays cold and clothes come out damp.
What is going on.
A dryer that tumbles without heat almost always has a failed heating part or a tripped safety device. On an electric dryer the heat comes from a coiled element; on a gas dryer it comes from an igniter and a gas valve. Both types also have thermal fuses and thermostats that cut the heat when airflow gets blocked. A clogged vent is the most common reason a dryer stops heating, and it is also a fire hazard, so the vent is the first thing to rule out.
Most common causes.

Clogged vent or lint duct
Lint packed in the vent run traps heat inside the cabinet. The dryer senses the overheat and shuts the heat source off through a thermal fuse or thermostat. A blocked vent is also a fire risk and should be cleared before anything else.

Blown thermal fuse
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that opens for good after an overheat. Once it blows the heat stops, though the drum may still turn. A blown fuse usually points back to a restricted vent that needs clearing too.

Failed heating element (electric dryers)
The coiled element heats the air on an electric dryer. The coil can burn through or short out, and once it does the dryer blows only room-temperature air.

Bad igniter or gas valve coils (gas dryers)
A gas dryer needs the igniter to glow hot enough to light the burner, and the valve coils to release the gas. If the igniter is weak or a coil has worn out, the burner never lights and no heat is produced.

Tripped breaker leg or faulty cycling thermostat
An electric dryer runs on a 240-volt circuit with two legs. If one leg trips, the motor still runs on 120 volts but the element gets no power. A failed cycling thermostat can also leave the heat circuit open.
Try this first: safe DIY checks.

Pull the lint screen and clear it fully, then check it is seated correctly.

Disconnect the vent hose at the back and look for packed lint in the hose and the wall duct. A clogged vent is a fire hazard, so clear any buildup before running the dryer again.

Run a load and feel the outside vent flap: weak or no airflow means the duct is still restricted.

Check the breaker panel. An electric dryer uses a double breaker, so reset both halves fully off and back on.

Confirm the cycle is not set to Air Dry or Fluff, which tumble with no heat by design.

Power-cycle the dryer by unplugging it for one minute, then test a short timed-dry cycle.
Maytag dryer not heating.
Maytag dryers are built on the Whirlpool platform and sold in electric and gas, with the top-load Extra Power line and larger Advanced Moisture Sensing models among the most common in Orange County homes. Advanced Moisture Sensing adds a third sensor reading, so slow drying on those units can come from a coated sensor strip as readily as a weak element or igniter. The Extra Power button drives a longer, hotter run, which means a partly failed heating element shows up clearly as loads that still finish damp. Drive noise on these machines usually traces to worn drum rollers or a dry idler pulley reached by opening the cabinet.

- Why does my dryer spin but not heat?
- The motor that turns the drum runs on a separate circuit from the heat source. A blown thermal fuse, a burned-out element, a bad igniter, or a tripped breaker leg can stop the heat while the drum keeps tumbling.
- Can a clogged vent stop a dryer from heating?
- Yes. A blocked vent traps heat in the cabinet, and the safety devices respond by cutting the heat. Lint packed in the duct is also a fire hazard, so the vent should be cleared before the dryer is used again.
- Is it worth repairing a dryer that will not heat?
- Usually yes. A heating element or thermal fuse repair costs far less than a new dryer, and these are common, well-understood fixes. Replacement makes more sense only on an older machine with several failing parts.
