Samsung Dishwasher Not Draining

The dishwasher finishes its cycle but leaves a pool of dirty water sitting in the bottom of the tub.
What is going on.
Standing water at the end of a cycle almost always means waste water cannot get out, not that water keeps coming in. The most frequent cause is a clog: in the filter, the drain hose, or the home garbage disposal the dishwasher shares a drain with. A failed drain pump or a stuck check valve is also possible. Water left in the tub can grow mold and leave a sour smell, so it is worth fixing promptly.

Clogged filter or sump area
Food debris, broken glass, and grease collect in the filter and the sump basin at the bottom of the tub. A packed filter blocks water from reaching the drain pump.

Garbage disposal knockout plug still in place
When a dishwasher drains into a new disposal, the disposal inlet knockout plug must be removed first. If it was left in, the dishwasher has nowhere to drain.

Kinked or clogged drain hose
The drain hose can kink behind the unit or clog with grease where it meets the disposal or sink drain. Either one traps water in the tub.

Failed drain pump
The drain pump pushes waste water out at the end of the cycle. A burned-out motor or an impeller jammed by debris stops drainage. A pump that hums but moves no water is a common sign.

Stuck drain check valve
A small check valve keeps drained water from flowing back into the tub. If it sticks or its flapper fails, water can return and pool again.

Run the kitchen garbage disposal for 15 seconds. A shared drain often clears once disposal contents are flushed.

Scoop out the standing water, then twist out the cylinder filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse it under hot water to clear trapped debris.

Wipe the sump area under the filter by hand and remove any food bits, glass, or labels you find.

Pull the dishwasher out enough to check the drain hose for a sharp kink and straighten it.

If the unit has a sink-top air gap, pop off the cap and clean out any sludge inside it.

Start a short cycle, cancel it midway, and listen near the drain pump for a steady hum without water movement.

Samsung dishwashers use a top-control layout and many models add an AutoRelease door that pops open at the end of the cycle to vent steam, plus a Smart Dry fan that circulates warm air, so a poor-drying complaint can stem from either the door-release mechanism or the fan. The StormWash and StormWash Plus systems use rotating jets that add moving parts to the wash circuit. Samsung dishwashers report fault codes such as 4C and 5C for water-supply and drainage faults, and on the Bespoke line a swappable front panel can sit slightly proud of the frame and disturb the door seal.

- Can I just bail the water out and run it again?
- You can clear the water to stop the smell, but the cycle will leave the tub full again unless the clog or failed part is fixed. Bailing is a stopgap, not a repair.
- Is standing water in a dishwasher an emergency?
- It is not urgent, but it should not sit for days. Stagnant water grows mold and bacteria and can corrode the tub. Plan to clear it and book service within a week.
- How long does a drain pump replacement take?
