What is going on.

A refrigerator produces water every time it runs an automatic defrost cycle, and that water is meant to flow to a pan underneath where it evaporates. When the path gets blocked or a connection fails, the water has nowhere to go and ends up under the crisper drawers or on the kitchen floor. Standing water can warp flooring and damage cabinets, so the source is worth finding before it spreads.

Most common causes.

  • Clogged defrost drain

Food debris and ice plug the small drain hole at the back of the freezer. Defrost water then backs up and spills into the fridge and onto the floor.

  • Frozen or cracked water supply line

The plastic line feeding the dispenser and ice maker can freeze and split, or a fitting can work loose, dripping water near the back or bottom of the unit.

  • Damaged or loose water inlet valve

The inlet valve controls water flow into the fridge. A cracked body or a loose connection lets water seep out whenever the valve is under pressure.

  • Cracked or overflowing drain pan

The pan under the fridge catches defrost water for evaporation. A cracked pan, or one knocked out of position, leaks onto the floor.

  • Failed door gasket

A worn door seal lets warm humid air inside. That moisture condenses and can collect as puddles that look like a leak.

Try this first: safe DIY checks.

  1. Find where the water collects, inside the cabinet or on the floor, to narrow down the source.

  2. Empty the freezer and pour warm water down the defrost drain hole to flush a clog.

  3. Check that the fridge sits level so defrost water drains toward the back as designed.

  4. Inspect the water line at the back of the unit for kinks, frost, or loose fittings.

  5. Wipe the door gasket clean and check that it seals fully when the door is closed.

  6. Pull the unit out and look for a cracked or misplaced drain pan underneath.

Sears refrigerator leaking water.

Sears sold refrigerators for decades under the Coldspot name and then the Kenmore brand, and it never operated its own refrigerator factory. A unit badged through Sears is a sourced appliance, so it must be identified by the model prefix to learn whether Whirlpool, Frigidaire, or LG actually built it. That identification drives everything, because the evaporator layout, defrost design, and compressor differ by manufacturer, and matching the repair procedure to the real builder is the first step before any teardown.

Questions homeowners ask.

Why is water leaking from the bottom of my refrigerator?
A clogged defrost drain is the usual cause. Water backs up, freezes into a sheet, and overflows onto the floor. A cracked drain pan or a loose water line can also leak from the bottom.
Can I keep using my refrigerator while it leaks water?
The fridge will keep cooling, but standing water can damage flooring and grow mold. It is fine to use briefly while you wait for service if you wipe up the water and watch the spot.
How do I know if the defrost drain is clogged?
Look for a thin layer of ice on the freezer floor or water under the crisper drawers. Both point to a defrost drain that cannot carry water away.
