Sub-Zero Refrigerator Fridge Warm, Freezer Cold
Last updated:
The freezer stays cold and frozen while the fresh food section above or beside it turns warm.
What is going on.
In most refrigerators a single cooling coil sits in the freezer, and a fan blows that cold air up or over into the fresh food section. When the fan or the airflow path fails, the freezer keeps its cold but the fridge warms up. This is one of the most recognizable refrigerator faults, and it usually traces back to airflow rather than a lost refrigerant charge.
Most common causes.
-
Failed evaporator fan motor
The evaporator fan blows cold air from the freezer coil into the fridge. When the motor stops, the freezer stays cold but the fridge gets no cold air at all.
-
Frost-blocked evaporator coil
A defrost system fault lets frost build into a solid block on the freezer coil. The frost blocks airflow, so cold air never reaches the fridge.
-
Faulty defrost heater or defrost thermostat
The defrost heater melts frost off the coil on a schedule. When the heater or its thermostat fails, frost builds up and chokes the airflow.
-
Blocked air damper or vent
A damper controls how much cold air enters the fridge. If it sticks shut or a vent is packed with food, the fresh food section warms up.
-
Faulty temperature control or thermistor
A bad thermistor or control board can misread the fridge temperature and stop calling for cold air even though the freezer runs fine.
Try this first: safe DIY checks.
-
Check that the vents between the freezer and fridge are not blocked by food or packaging.
-
Open the freezer and listen for the evaporator fan running behind the back panel.
-
Look for a heavy buildup of frost on the freezer wall, which signals a defrost fault.
-
Confirm both temperature dials are set correctly and were not bumped.
-
Empty the fridge and freezer, unplug the unit for twenty-four hours, then restore power to test whether airflow returns.
-
Make sure neither door is being held open by an overfilled shelf or a worn gasket.
Sub-Zero refrigerator fridge warm, freezer cold.
Sub-Zero refrigerators are built-in units organized into the Classic series, the PRO series, and the Designer columns, and many use a dual-refrigeration design with separate sealed systems for the fresh-food and freezer compartments. Because each compartment can have its own compressor and evaporator, one section can drift or fail while the other holds, which points diagnosis to that specific sealed system. Sub-Zero also runs a NASA-inspired air purification module and electronic controls that hold temperature within a tight band, so service work weighs the magnetic door seals, the condenser, and the sealed system together.

Questions homeowners ask.
- Why is my freezer cold but the fridge is warm?
- Cold air for the fridge comes from the freezer coil through a fan. A failed evaporator fan or a frost-blocked coil stops that air, so the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms up.
- Will defrosting my refrigerator fix a warm fridge?
- Unplugging the unit for a day can melt a frost block and restore airflow temporarily. If frost returns within a week, the defrost system itself has failed and needs repair.
- How urgent is a warm fridge with a cold freezer?
- The food in the fridge is at risk above 40 degrees, so it is worth addressing within a day or two. Move perishable items to the freezer or a cooler while you wait for service.
