Whirlpool Dishwasher Won't Start
Last updated:
The dishwasher does not respond when you press start, or the cycle never begins.
What is going on.
A dishwasher that will not start can mean no power is reaching it, or the controls will not let a cycle run. The cause may be as simple as a tripped breaker, a door that is not latched, or an active control-lock setting. It can also be a failed door latch switch, a tripped thermal fuse, or a control board that has stopped sending power. Checking the easy items first often saves a service call.
Most common causes.
-
No power at the outlet or breaker
A tripped breaker, a blown fuse, or a switched-off wall outlet cuts power to the dishwasher. Many units share a kitchen circuit with the disposal.
-
Door not latched or a failed latch switch
The door latch holds the door shut and its switch tells the controls the door is closed. If the door does not latch or the switch fails, the dishwasher will not start.
-
Control lock or delay-start is active
A control-lock or child-lock setting blocks the buttons, and a delay-start timer holds the cycle for hours. Either makes the unit look dead when it is working as set.
-
Tripped thermal fuse
A thermal fuse protects the control board from overheating. A power surge or excess heat can blow it, which cuts power to the controls until it is replaced.
-
Failed control board or touchpad
The main control board powers nearly every part of the dishwasher. A failed board, or a worn touchpad that does not register presses, can stop the cycle from starting.
Try this first: safe DIY checks.
-
Check the home electrical panel and reset the breaker for the kitchen, then confirm any wall switch that feeds the dishwasher is on.
-
Press the door firmly until you hear the latch click, then try start again.
-
Look for a lit lock icon and hold the lock button for several seconds to clear control lock or child lock.
-
Confirm a delay-start timer is not set, since that holds the cycle and the unit looks idle.
-
Do a power-cycle reset: shut off the breaker for a minute, turn it back on, and try a cycle.
-
Make sure the cycle and start buttons are pressed in the order the panel shows, since some models need start held briefly.
Whirlpool dishwasher won't start.
Whirlpool dishwashers anchor the Whirlpool Corporation platform that also underpins Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, and many Kenmore units, so their pumps, wash arms, and filter assemblies are among the most widely stocked in the market. Drying is heat-element based on most models, which means dishes that come out wet usually point to a failed heating element or a high-limit thermostat rather than a fan. Controls range from a front button panel to a hidden top control, and Whirlpool also sells panel-ready units where a custom cabinet panel can pull the door out of square and cause latch or leak faults.

Questions homeowners ask.
- Why does my dishwasher have lights but will not start?
- Lights mean power is reaching the controls. The hold-up is usually the door latch switch, an active control lock or delay-start, or a touchpad that is not registering the start press.
- How do I reset a dishwasher that will not turn on?
- Turn off the dishwasher breaker at the home panel, leave it off for about a minute, then turn it back on. This clears many minor control glitches.
- Is a control board replacement worth it?
- A control board is one of the costlier dishwasher parts. If the unit is under about eight years old and otherwise sound, repair is usually still worthwhile. A technician can advise based on the model and its condition.
