What DEMO means.

Demo mode on a GE freezer disables the compressor so a showroom unit can run quietly without using energy. The lights and display still work normally, which is exactly why a freezer in demo mode is so confusing: everything looks fine except the contents are warm. Demo mode is the first thing to check when a GE freezer refuses to cool with no other symptoms. It is almost always activated accidentally by a curious finger or left on after delivery.

Most common causes.

  • Demo mode was left on after delivery.

  • Button combination was pressed accidentally.

  • A reset defaulted back to demo on certain models.

Try this first: safe DIY troubleshooting.

  1. On most GE upright freezers with an electronic panel: press and hold the temperature-up and temperature-down buttons together for 3 to 5 seconds.

  2. Watch for "DEMO" to disappear and listen for the compressor to start within 60 seconds.

  3. If you cannot find the right combination, the rating plate inside the freezer shows the model number, and the owner manual lists the exit sequence.
