What E3 means.

E3 (commonly seen as F3-E3 on older models) flags the defrost system as failing. The board energized the defrost heater on schedule, but either the heater is open-circuit, the safety thermostat is open, or the board never actually sent the signal because a relay failed. Frost builds on the evaporator coil within days and the fresh-food side warms up. E3 is one of the most common Whirlpool service calls in years 5 to 8 of unit life.

Most common causes.

  • Defrost heater element failed open (most common).

  • Defrost thermostat (bimetal) failed open.

  • Wire to heater chafed or broken.

  • Main board defrost relay failed.

Try this first: safe DIY troubleshooting.

  1. Do a 24-hour manual defrost (unplug, doors open, towels at the base).

  2. After defrost the unit will work for 1 to 3 weeks before frost builds again.

  3. Schedule service. This code does not repair itself.

  4. Do not bypass the safety thermostat. It is a fire-prevention device.
