Refrigerator temperature sensor fault on Kenmore 110.xxx (Whirlpool-built) units.
What E1 means.
E1 on a Kenmore 110.xxx is the same code as on its Whirlpool sibling: the main refrigerator temperature sensor has failed or is disconnected. Until E1 clears the controller cannot manage cabinet temperature and falls back to a backup duty cycle that usually over-cools or under-cools depending on firmware. One of the most common Kenmore Whirlpool-built service codes in years 4 to 7.

Sensor frozen in a block of ice from a drain backup.

Connector at the back wall corroded or loose.

Wire harness chafed.

Unplug for 1 minute.

Restore power. If E1 returns within 30 minutes, the sensor is bad.

Look at the rear interior wall. If you see ice forming there, the defrost drain is also blocked.
