Defrost system fault. The heater, thermostat, or control circuit has failed.
What E1 means.
E1 on a KitchenAid points to the defrost system. The board attempted a defrost cycle that did not complete: either the heater is open-circuit, the safety thermostat opened too early, or the relay on the main board failed. As frost builds on the evaporator coil over the following days, airflow drops and the fresh-food compartment warms. E1 is one of the most common KitchenAid service codes in years 5 to 8.
